Pro Bowl CB Chris Harris sitting out Broncos workouts as he seeks new contract

Chris Harris

Denver Broncos cornerback Chris Harris isn’t going to attend his team’s voluntary workouts Tuesday when the offseason program opens up.

As noted by Jeff Legwold of ESPN, Harris is trying to hammer out a new contract with the Broncos at this time: “Harris has made it clear he would like a contract extension after signing a rather team friendly deal in 2015 and the Broncos are still expected to try to work out something after the draft.”

Now, it’s worth pointing out that we’re not talking about a holdout or anything of that sort at this time. Voluntary workouts are often skipped by veteran players for many different reasons, so there’s no cause for alarm just yet.

That said, Harris is set to enter the final year of his current deal and will make under $8.8 million in 2019 without a new deal. Compared to what other top cornerbacks are hauling in these days, that’s almost insulting for a player of his caliber.

Last year, Harris tallied 49 tackles, three interceptions (including one for a touchdown), and a sack. He’s consistently been one of the highest-graded players every year recently, per PFF, and was the third-rated cornerback in the league last year.

Needless to say, he certainly has every right to do what he feels is necessary to get paid like a top corner in this league.
