Report: Teams looking to trade for Jadeveon Clowney, Frank Clark

Jadeveon Clowney

This year’s franchise tag deadline was defined by teams attempting to retain edge pass rushers. That’s not really a surprise given the premium teams place on this position in the pass-first NFL.

It was, however, surprising to learn that the Kansas City Chiefs placed the franchise tag on Dee Ford in hopes of trading him. Ford, 27, is coming off a brilliant 2018 campaign that saw him record 29 quarterback hits and 13 sacks en route to earning a Pro Bowl appearance.

Now comes this rather interesting report from The Athletic’s Jay Glazer noting that teams are sniffing around at the possibility of trading for Houston Texans pass rusher Jadeveon Clowney and Frank Clark of the Seattle Seahawks.

In no way does this mean either team has put its elite pass rusher on the trade market. Rather, it’s other teams attempting to gauge whether there would actually be trade interest. Both Clowney and Clark had tags placed on them earlier this week.

The No. 1 overall pick of Houston back in 2014, Clowney has earned three consecutive trips to the Pro Bowl. He’s racked up 59 quarterback hits and 24.5 sacks during that span.

Meanwhile, the 25-year-old Clark has tallied nine-plus sacks in each of the past three seasons. He’s coming off a career-best 13-sack performance for Seattle last season.

If either team were to be interested in trading these stars, a first-round pick would be the starting-off point in discussions. Even then, it seems unlikely.
