Coach Gregg Popovich, who rarely shows much of a sentimental side, did so.

“He (Wade) certainly is an iconic an iconic figure as far as NBA basketball goes. And it’s not just because of the way he played. He played hard. He played to win. He had a ferocious attitude on the court,” Popovich said prior to the game. “But it was matched with a wonderful smile and a great understanding of the world and community off the court.”

Fans of the Spurs also paid tribute to Wade.

Wade is obviously one of the greatest players in NBA history. He also has a tremendous history against the Spurs.

Wade’s Miami teams battled San Antonio in consecutive NBA Finals in 2013 and 2014, with each team winning once. The Heat’s victory in 2013 was significantly aided by a tremendous performance from Wade in Game 4, which helped the Heat wrestle home-court advantage back. As you can see in their tribute, the Spurs did not hide from that.

San Antonio did a first class job paying tribute to an all-time great and an old rival.
