Luka Doncic offers solution to NCAA refusing to pay players

Mavericks rookie Luka Doncic

It might not be exactly what people are looking for, but Luka Doncic has an idea about how young hoops stars can get paid before they’re eligible to enter the NBA.

On Wednesday night, NBA star Donovan Mitchell bemoaned Zion Williamson’s freak injury — he hurt his knee against North Carolina after his shoe exploded.

Of course, many people (Donovan included) immediately pointed to the fact that the NCAA refuses to pay players, which many feel is pretty darn hypocritical due to the organization hauling in literally over $1 billion in revenue recently.

Doncic saw Mitchell’s tweet and offered his take on what players could do to combat this.

It’s certainly not a popular take. But if anyone can prove the European route pays off, it’s Doncic. The Slovenian superstar made his bones in the EuroLeague, where he won a championship with Real Madrid and was named MVP in 2018. Oh, and he got paid in the process.

Of course, we recently watched LaVar Ball send his two younger sons to Europe attempting to maneuver around the NCAA, with much less success.

Based on how risky it is for players to compete in the NCAA without any pay and any guarantee they’ll get paid later on, however, perhaps we’ll see more American players pondering this route in the future.
