Dirk Nowitzki won’t rule out return next season

Dirk Nowitzki

It seems like a given that Dirk Nowitzki is playing out the final season of his storied professional career, which has been spent entirely with the Dallas Mavericks.

However, after the All-Star Game on Sunday Nowitzki was asked about whether new teammate Kristaps Porzingis has tried to convince him to come back next season, and his answer was revealing.

“Briefly, but I’m going to make that decision by myself, really what’s best for the franchise,” Nowitzki said, per Brad Townsend of the Dallas Morning News. “We’ll see how my body is feeling and if I just feel like I can’t do it no more, then it’s time to go.”

Essentially, Nowitzki isn’t ruling out a return.

He’s only playing 11 minutes per game this year as he returns from the ankle injury that forced him out late last season and has shown signs that Father Time is catching up to him.

But the shooting touch is still there. On Sunday in Charlotte, despite playing just four minutes in the game Nowitzki scored nine points on 3-of-3 from behind the arc.

Clearly Nowitzki still has something left to offer a young team and its European superstar duo of Porzingis and Luka Doncic, even if most of his help is coming from the bench.
