Golden State Warriors star and two-time reigning NBA Finals MVP Kevin Durant continues to do good within the community.
Durant and his Warriors will make their way to Washington D.C. to take on the Wizards on Thursday. While there, the star will return to his old stomping grounds of Prince George’s County in Maryland.
Sure Durant will want to visit with old friends and the like. But that’s not the reason for the future Hall of Famer’s return to his hometown. Instead, Durant will be opening up an education center to help low-income children prepare for college.
It’s called the College Track at The Durant Center. Durant’s visit will be part of the grand opening.
“The full circle stuff that you dream about,” Durant told the Washington Post. “So many people that meant so much to me at that time, and to see my name on the building.”
The center is literally across the street from where Durant grew up in the downtrodden Suitland neighborhood.
For the star NBA player, this is a way to give back to a community that shaped who he is today.
Durant’s backstory is by now well known. He grew up in an impoverished area of Maryland — relying on his hard-working mother to put food on the table. Durant’s past certainly has played a role in the man he grew up to be.
“Just so many memories,” Durant said. “So many moments that I had as a kid walking up and down those streets and dreaming of something bigger.”
