John Elway admits hiring Vance Joseph was a failure

The Denver Broncos and general manager John Elway are hoping they made the right decision in hiring former Chicago Bears defensive coordinator Vic Fangio to be their next head coach.

This move comes after two disastrous seasons under then-coach Vance Joseph, who posted a 11-21 record in Denver before being fired following the 2018 campaign.

In taking about the decision to hire Joseph back in 2017, Elway more than admitted it was a major mistake.

“I talked to (Vance Joseph) before the process a couple of years ago and knew him, and going in, I had an idea that he was kind of our guy,” Elway told NBC’s Peter King. “I admit it. I was wrong on that one. I don’t like to say it out loud because I don’t want to offend VJ, who is a good football coach. But things didn’t work out.”

It’s not that Elway is throwing Joseph under the bus. He did that by failing to provide the current Arizona Cardinals defensive coordinator a quarterback to work with. That was the major issue in Joseph’s two seasons with the Broncos.

Admitting a mistake is one thing. Making moves to rectify said mistake is a completely different thing. For fans in Mile High, the hope is that Fangio’s hiring will change the trajectory of this organization.
