Fletcher Cox strongly disputes negative Carson Wentz report

Eric Hartline-USA TODAY Sports

A report that shined an unfavorable light on Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz is being strongly disputed by team leader Fletcher Cox.

What’s in the report?

  • The report, penned by Joseph Santoliquito of Philly Voice, alleged that teammates and sources within the organization say Wentz “bullied” offensive coordinator Mike Groh.
  • The report also alleges Wentz is “selfish,” “uncompromising,” “egotistical,” one who plays “favorites” and doesn’t like to be “questioned,” one who needs to “practice what he preaches” and fails “to take accountability” (more details here).

Strong rebuttal: As the report circulated and Cox got his eyeballs on it, he strongly denied the allegations directed at his quarterback.

  • Cox wrote, “Reading through this Carson Wentz thing and as a leader on this team none of that is true. Carson is a great teammate and great player we are all behind him 100% he’s our guy and will come back and prove the world wrong. If you got a problem feel free to @ me I’ll respond.”

The bottom line: Typically, there’s usually at least a bit of fire behind smoke this thick, but that doesn’t mean the sky is falling.

  • We know for certain that the Eagles have had success the past two seasons when Nick Foles replaced Wentz in the starting lineup due to injuries.
  • It wouldn’t be a huge stretch to assume at least some players have — at the least — some mixed feelings about who’s best suited to lead the offense going forward.
  • In the end, even if there are some within the organization that believe Wentz is immature and selfish, that’s something they need to work out with him.
  • Foles is all but gone already, and the Eagles have already made it clear Wentz is the long-term answer at quarterback.
