Packers won’t commit to Aaron Rodgers starting Week 16

Now that the Green Bay Packers have officially been eliminated from playoff contention, it seems to make sense that the team might decide to sit a banged up Aaron Rodgers for the final two weeks of the season.

Rodgers himself has pushed back against this idea, noting multiple times that he wants to close up shop with his team.

Unfortunately for the quarterback, that decision is not his to make. In a conference call ahead of this week’s game against the New York Jets, interim head coach Joe Philbin wouldn’t commit to Rodgers as the starter.

Rodgers might be upset about this, but there’s really nothing to gain from playing him. He has nothing left to prove in what has been a lost season and has been dealing with a knee issue for a vast majority of the year.

On the other hand, Green Bay might want to give backup quarterback DeShone Kizer some play. Let’s not even mention the fact that losing out would help the Packers’ draft positioning in 2019.

If this is indeed the end of Rodgers’ season, he’ll finish the campaign having thrown for nearly 4,000 yards with 23 touchdowns and just two interceptions.
