Kyle Shanahan shuts down rumors linking his father to the Packers

The Green Bay Packers have likely already started vetting candidates to replace recently-fired head coach Mike McCarthy.

It’s going to be a somewhat drawn-out process for the powers to be in Green Bay. There’s no shortage of quality candidates out there, and the Packers are going to do their due diligence.

One name that has come up in the rumor mill is former Denver Broncos and Washington Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan. Having not coached since the 2013 season, Shanahan is a widely respected mind. Though, to some, he’s seen as a retread.

Asked about the possibility of his father being a candidate for the Packers job, San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan pretty much indicated that it’s not happening.

Shanahan, 66, would be the second-oldest head coach in the NFL behind Seattle’s Pete Carroll should he decide to come out of retirement.

For Green Bay, the idea of hiring Shanahan makes no real sense. They must avoid those who can’t bring this franchise to the future.

Shanahan certainly doesn’t fit the mold of up-and-coming candidates that have been linked to the Packers since McCarthy’s firing earlier this week.
