J.J. Watt wants to bring NHL team to Houston

Houston Texans defensive end J.J. Watt has been an absolute fixture within the local community since the team selected him No. 11 overall back in 2011. What he’s done for Houston is by now well known.

Watt is now joining a push to bring yet another pro sports team to the city.

“Maybe we could get an NHL team here,” Watt said, via Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle. “I’d love to get in on that.”

Flush with a vibrant sports scene that also includes the NBA’s Houston Rockets and MLB’s Houston Astros, this city would seemingly make all the sense in the world for the NHL.

Unfortunately for Watt and those looking to bring hockey to Houston, Seattle has already been awarded an NHL franchise. That comes on the heels of the Las Vegas Knights’ inaugural 2017-18 season.

Even then, Watt’s love for hockey is deep.

“I love hockey, I’m a huge hockey fan. I love to skate. I love playing,” Watt sai. “There’s nothing like putting the puck in the back of the net. I’m probably too big to be the guy who does that anymore. I guess I could be an enforcer.”

An enforcer he is. Watt has racked up 24 quarterback hits and 14.5 sacks in 14 games for the Texans this season. Maybe he can use this mentality to convince the NHL that Houston is ripe for hockey.
