Dirk Nowitzki could make season debut Wednesday against Hawks

Dirk Nowitzki

Dirk Nowitzki has yet to play for the Dallas Mavericks this season. But that could change as early as Wednesday night against the Atlanta Hawks.

Nowitzki, who has been recovering from ankle surgery all season, is officially listed as questionable for Wednesday’s game.

That’s obviously a good sign. Even if Dirk doesn’t play on Wednesday, Thursday at the Phoenix Suns or Sunday at home against the Sacramento Kings would seem likely — barring a setback.

The Mavericks unquestionably want to get the future Hall of Famer on the floor with Luka Doncic, the star rookie who’s been a one-man highlight reel this season.

Nowitzki is obviously not the player that he once was. But he remained effective during the 2017-18 season, averaging 12 points a game while shooting 45.6% from the field, 40.9% on threes, and 89.8% on free throws.

Dallas has held up relatively well in Nowitzki’s absence, going 14-11.
