Report: Yankees and Red Sox among teams interested in Mariners All-Star

The Seattle Mariners are in the midst of a fire sale as the MLB’s hot stove heats up. That already included the team trading ace starter James Paxton to the New York Yankees earlier in the month.

All-Star closer Edwin Diaz could be the next to go. And according to Joel Sherman of the NY Post, two AL East rivals could be competing for his services.

“The five most interested teams in Diaz so far have been the Mets, Yankees, Braves, Phillies and Red Sox,” Sherman noted.

The report goes on to indicate that Seattle could entice a bidding team to pick up the remainder of Robinson Cano’s contract in order to land Diaz. It’s similar to when the Braves traded Craig Kimbrel years back. Atlanta forced the San Diego Padres to take on Melvin Upton’s contract in that deal. Cano has been on the block this month.

Diaz, 24, finished last season with a MLB-best 57 saves, a 1.96 ERA and a stellar 0.79 WHIP. He also struck out 124 batters in 73.1 innings. Talk about domination.

Under team control for the next four seasons, the young Diaz would net the Mariners a massive haul. Whether the Yankees or Red Sox would be willing to pay that remains to be seen. But they are among the most-interested teams.
