J.D. Martinez makes MLB history with Silver Slugger awards

J.D. Martinez had a fantastic season for the Boston Red Sox in 2018. As it turns out, he made some MLB history in the process.

On Thursday, it was announced that Martinez won the American League Silver Slugger Awards at both DH and the outfield. This is a first in the history of the Silver Slugger Award — which has honored the best hitter at each position in both leagues since 1980.

Martinez served primarily as Boston’s DH in 2018. He played 92 games at DH, 32 in left field, and 25 in right. It’s also worth noting that the Silver Slugger does not differentiate between outfield positions. Teammate Mookie Betts and Los Angeles Angels star Mike Trout were the other American League outfielders to claim the award.

As strange as it seems for Martinez to win at two positions, his worthiness can’t be disputed. He hit .330/.402/.629 with 43 home runs, 130 RBI, 111 runs scored, and even stole six bases.
