WATCH: Crazy sequence of events epitomizes the Tennessee experience

In a game where things couldn’t seem to get worse for the Tennessee Volunteers, they did in an embarrassing sequence of events.

Tennessee’s stretch of disaster started on a kickoff following an Alabama score, when the return man made an illegal fair catch signal that put the ball at the two-yard line.

As Tennessee’s offense took the field, CBS’ sideline reporter Jamie Erdahl shared head coach Jeremy Pruitt’s statement to the team at halftime. Pruitt ripped into his players, in part for their lack of execution and inability to play the right way.

Only seconds after Pruitt’s speech was shared, a perfect example of the team’s issues stood out. Pinned near the goal line, one of Tennessee’s offensive linemen stepped on quarterback Keller Chryst’s foot and he fell into the end zone for a safety.

The game was already over at this point, but it added to an ugly blowout loss at the hands of the Crimson Tide. The Volunteers are a program at the very start of a rebuild, and clearly plenty of work remains ahead for them.
