Report: Rangers to fire manager Jeff Banister

After nearly four seasons at the helm, the Texas Rangers have reportedly fired manager Jeff Banister just a few weeks before the season ends.

According to The Dallas Morning News, the organization has decided it will not bring back its skipper in 2019 after the team’s second consecutive losing season.

Banister, who took over as manager in 2015, saw his team excel in his first two seasons at the helm. The Rangers won 88 games in 2015 and 95 games in 2016, he also won Manager of the Year in 2015.

Now two years after the team’s 95-win season, Texas is set to finish with sub-70 wins for the first time since 2014 and have a consecutive sub-.500 seasons for the first time since 2007-’08.

According to the report, Don Wakamatsu is expected to take over as the interim manager for the remainder of the season. He also will reportedly be a candidate to become the team’s long-term manager.
