Addison Russell releases statement denying domestic abuse allegations

After being placed on administrative leave by MLB for allegations of domestic abuse by his ex-wife, Chicago Cubs shortstop Addison Russell released a statement denying the allegations.

Russell, who was investigated by the league in 2017 for allegations of domestic abuse, denies the allegations and is confident the league’s reopened investigation will clear him.

How long Russell will remain on administrative league is undetermined. Houston Astros closer Roberto Osuna, who was later suspended 75 games by MLB for allegedly assaulting a woman, spent multiple months on administrative league before the league concluded its investigation.

While Russell’s timetable is unknown, it is unlikely he is back with the team for the postseason given the spotlight the Cubs and league would be under in October.
