Willie Mays pays tribute to Aretha Franklin with heartfelt statement

Following the death of legendary performer Aretha Franklin on Thursday morning, many from around the sports world weighed in on the loss of the “Queen of Soul.”

Throughout her life, Franklin impacted the lives of so many around the world. Among them was Hall of Famer Willie Mays, who weighed in on Franklin’s passing with a heartfelt statement released on Thursday.

“The older I get, it seems like the more ‘goodbyes’ must be said, and the harder they are to say,” Mays said. “I just heard that Aretha Franklin has passed. I’ve known Aretha since my early years in New York. We used to joke around. She was something. I just want to say to her family that I truly admired her as a singer and as a woman. I am so sorry we’ve lost her. Goodbye my friend.”

It’s a very meaningful and kind statement and shows how much Franklin meant to so many different people. The world lost an incredible singer and an even more amazing person.
