Rockies call up franchise legend Matt Holliday from the minors

Perhaps the single greatest player in Colorado Rockies history will soon be back with the big league club.

After signing a minor league contract with Colorado earlier this summer, outfielder Matt Holliday has been called up from Triple-A Albuquerque and could be at Coors Field in time for Thursday’s game against the San Diego Padres.

Holliday, 38, has not played for the Rockies since being dealt to the Oakland Athletics following the 2008 season. A seven-time All-Star, he posted a .319 average with 128 homers and 483 RBI in five seasons with the Rockies.

The outfielder was hitting at a splendid .345 average with a .455 on-base percentage in two minor league stops before getting the call. He’ll now join a Rockies team that’s in the midst of a pennant race, just 1.5 games behind the Arizona Diamondbacks in the NL West.
