Report: All-Star Buster Posey likely to have season-ending surgery

Buster Posey

The San Francisco Giants are out of realistic playoff contention. It’s also highly possible that they’ll be without catcher Buster Posey for the rest of the year.

John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle reported that Posey “faces likely hip surgery that would cut short his season.”

Shea also cited executive vice president of baseball operations, Brian Sabean, who said “I’d say that that’s a safe assumption.” Meanwhile, manager Bruce Bochy said that “nothing’s been determined yet,” but did note that it was being discussed.

Posey has been dealing with a bad hip for a while. In fact, he missed the 2018 All-Star Game to receive an injection in his right hip.

It’s generally shown with his performance, as well. Posey is hitting a respectable .286/.360/.386 on the season. But those numbers are all well down from the .320/.400/.462 marks that he had in 2017, and his pre-2018 career totals of .308/.376/.474.

The impact of the injury has been most noticeable in his power numbers. Posey has only five home runs and 28 extra-base hits in 2018.

Posey has been one of baseball’s best players since debuting with the Giants. He’s made six NL All-Star teams, won four Silver Slugger Awards, a gold Glove, was the 2010 NL Rookie of the Year, and the 2012 NL MVP.
