Panthers starting CB Ross Cockrell placed on IR with broken leg

The Carolina Panthers have placed Ross Cockrell on IR following a freak injury on Monday that resulted in a broken leg for the starting cornerback.

Joe Person of the Charlotte Observer noted the Panthers claimed offensive tackle Adam Bisnowaty off waivers from the Detroit Lions in a corresponding roster move.

Cockrell broke both the tibia and fibula on his left leg and will undergo surgery to repair the damage. At this time, it’s unknown whether this injury will be a season-ending one for him.

The Panthers signed Cockrell to a two-year, $6.6 million contract this spring in free agency.

He played for the New York Giants last year, was with the Pittsburgh Steelers for two years before that and was originally a fourth-round pick out of Duke, selected by the Buffalo Bills in 2014.

Over the course of his four-year career, Cockrell has started 32 games, tallying 155 tackles, five interceptions and 36 pass breakups.
