While New York Mets fans were hoping to see Peter Alonso make his MLB debut this season, they’ll now have to wait until 2019.

On Tuesday, New York’s assistant general manager John Ricco announced the organization’s No.2 prospect according to MLB.com will not be called up in September.

It’s disappointing news for Mets fans, who were hopeful the 23-year-old first baseman would be called up after a fantastic season in the minors. Alonso started the 2018 season in Double-A Binghamton, where he posted a .314/.440/.573 slash line with 15 home runs in 65 games.

The Mets promoted Alonso to Triple-A Las Vegas in June and he has performed extremely well since. In 60 games, he registered a .894 OPS with 18 home runs, 14 doubles and 59 RBI.

Ricco said a lack of playing time due to the presence of Wilmer Flores, Jay Bruce and Dominic Smith prevented the club from giving Alonso the regular at-bats he would need in the majors.

Instead, Alonso will be allowed to rest in September then join the team in spring training where he will be evaluated by the club.
