Mets’ David Wright to begin rehab assignment on Sunday

The long road back to the diamond seems to be back on track for one of the most beloved players in New York.

Third baseman David Wright is set to begin a rehab assignment at Class-A Advanced St. Lucie on Sunday.

Less than a year after he last played in a game, a three-game stint with St. Lucie at the end of August 2017, the 35-year-old third baseman is now prepared to return to the diamond and play the hot corner.

Persistent back and shoulder injuries have kept Wright out of New York’s lineup for over two years. His last appearance with the Mets came on May 27, 2016, making him almost a distant memory in the team’s lineup.

It’s still tough to believe Wright will be able to return during the 2018 season. New York has nothing to play for this season and would have no reason to rush him back for a few weeks in September, even if the moment would be sentimental.

While the Mets have been able to recoup some of the money owed to Wright thanks to an insurance policy taken on Wright’s contract, he will still be on the payroll for another two seasons after 2018.

At this point, it would be miraculous if Wright ever suits up for the Mets again.
