Michigan head coach John Beilein

This time around, the person promising to come back stronger than ever isn’t a player. Michigan coach John Beilein is now recovering from heart surgery.

According to the school, the 65-year-old coach underwent a successful, scheduled double bypass heart surgery Monday. The statement said the procedure is designed to improve blood flow to the heart.

Beilein will not travel with the Wolverines on their upcoming nine-day trip to Spain, but he’s expected to make a full recovery and plans to coach all of the 2018-19 campaign.

“I am going to work very hard in my rehabilitation to be stronger than ever by the time practice begins for this upcoming season.”

Beilein arrived at the school in 2007. He’s compiled a 248-143 record with Michigan, which he’s turned into a perennial NCAA tournament qualifier.

In addition to winning Big Ten tournament titles the last two seasons, the Wolverines have reached the Sweet 16 and national championship game. Michigan was also the runner-up in 2013 under Beilein.
