Report: Jordan Brand to cut ties with Kawhi Leonard

Spurs forward Kawhi Leonard

Kawhi Leonard wants to have a bigger presence through his endorsement deals, but his future will not be with Jordan Brand.

According to Nick DePaula of ESPN, the Nike subsidiary will “let Leonard walk” when the two-time Defensive Player of the Year’s contract expires.

Leonard recently forced a trade from the San Antonio Spurs, ultimately landing with the Toronto Raptors. However, he may be set on playing for the Los Angeles Lakers and becoming a star off the basketball court.

Previously, a report said Leonard’s family believed playing in the small market of San Antonio hurt his ability to attract endorsement deals. That might’ve contributed to Leonard turning down a $22 million extension offer from Jordan Brand.

But for Leonard to command the money he apparently seeks from a shoe sponsor, the now-Toronto star likely must be willing to become a more vocal presence.
