Report: Jets releasing 2015 second-round pick Devin Smith

The New York Jets are reportedly releasing 2015 second-round pick Devin Smith, who has struggled to recover from suffering two torn ACLs during his career, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Smith missed the entire 2017 season with his second torn ACL. In his first two seasons as a pro, he caught just 10 passes for 135 yards and one touchdown, appearing in 14 games total.

A former Ohio State star, Smith was highly regarded coming out of college. He was a deep-play machine during his tenure with the Buckeyes, averaging 20.7 yards per catch.

It remains to be seen if Smith has a future in the NFL. The Jets have a very crowded roster at receiver, so letting him go was a sensible move. Perhaps some more rehabilitation and a new environment could help this young man (still just 26) get back on track.
