Mariners catcher retires, joins organization fighting eating disorders

It’s not often you see a 28-year-old baseball player retire just a few months after he was on a club’s Opening Day roster. On the rare occasions they do retire, it’s usually for medical reasons.

In the case of Mike Marjama, who was the Seattle Mariners backup catcher early in the season, he is stepping away from the game for an entirely different reason.

According to The News Tribune, Marjama informed Seattle this week that he would be stepping away from the game and committing his time to being a member of the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA).

Earlier this year, the 28-year-old catcher shared his story with Uninterrupted about his experiences with having an eating disorder, including during his playing career in the minors. He also shared his story with The News Tribune earlier this year.

While it’s unfortunate the game will lose a person of such character, seeing Marjama move into an area he is passionate about is inspiring.
