Former NFLer arrested on heroin and assault charges

A full-time starter over the course of his 10-year NFL career, defensive tackle Barry Cofield flew under the radar with the likes of the Washington Redskins and New York Giants.

Now retired, Cofield probably hopes that this rung true for his post-NFL life. The 34-year-old former Northwestern standout was arrested Tuesday in Lake Mary, Fla. after he was found passed out at the wheel of his SUV.

Once authorities arrived to the scene, Cofield rammed his car into a police vehicle before attempting to elude the responding officer. Ultimately, the 6-foot-3, 305-pound man would be captured. At that point, the officer found a substance on him that would later test positive for heroin.

According to the Orlando Sentinel, Cofield was ultimately charged with possession of heroin, fleeing and eluding, and aggravated assault on a police officer. He refused to comment when reached by phone on Wednesday.

Having played in the NFL from 2006-15, Cofield earned nearly $30 million during his playing career. Obviously, his retired life has not been as rewarding.
