MRI reveals hip strain for Jay Bruce

Jay Bruce is one of the MLB stars that could be traded in 2017

The New York Mets placed outfielder Jay Bruce on the DL on Tuesday. On Wednesday, it was revealed that an MRI showed a hip strain.

That would certainly explain a lot of what’s happened to Bruce in 2018.

Bruce has done very little at the plate this season. He’s struggled to a .212/.292/.321 slash line, well below his career marks of .247/.318/.466. More noticeable has been the lack of power.

Bruce was one of baseball’s top power hitters in 2016 and 2017, hitting 33 and 36 home runs, respectively. He’s also only failed to hit 20 home runs in a season once. But in 2018, Bruce has hit only three home runs, the last of which came on May 27.

Certainly, a strained hip would go a long way in explaining such a dramatic drop. Bruce is in the first year of a three-year, $39 million deal. So, the Mets are certainly hoping that he can turn things around upon his return.
