Lakers reportedly acquire second-round pick from the Sixers

The Philadelphia Sixers will no longer have six picks in the 2018 NBA Draft Thursday night. That number is reportedly down to five, with Philadelphia having sent the 39th pick in the draft to the Los Angeles Lakers for a 2019 second-round pick and cash considerations.

Normally, a trade of this ilk wouldn’t be a huge deal. But this Lakers team is looking to be big time players in free agency. They are also favored to land disgruntled San Antonio Spurs star Kawhi Leonard in a trade. Any additional assets in this year’s draft could signify something larger.

While Los Angeles does have young players to offer San Antonio in a trade for Leonard, it lacks the necessary draft picks to compete with other teams looking to acquire the All-Star. Adding this pick to go with the 25th and 47th selections could move the ball a tad.

In any event, it’s highly unlikely the Lakers will make three selections come Thursday night in Brooklyn. Something else is obviously on the horizon here.
