Kings reportedly team to watch in Kawhi Leonard sweepstakes

Now that Kawhi Leonard reportedly wants a trade from the San Antonio Spurs, rumors about a potential deal are going to heat up big time between now and next week’s NBA Draft.

Leonard has reportedly made it known he prefers to join the Los Angeles Lakers. In a vacuum, that tends to make a ton of sense.

Still not slated to become a free agent until following next season, Leonard might not have a whole lot to say about where he ends up. If the Spurs do in fact trade him they’re going to be looking for the best possible return.

It’s in this that the Sacramento Kings could become a potential landing spot. According to Chris Mannix of Yahoo! Sports, Sacramento is yet another team to watch when it come to an eventual Leonard sweepstakes.

Long irrelevant in the broader landscape of the NBA, Sacramento is coming off a 27-win campaign and has not earned a playoff spot since all the way back in 2005-06. It makes sense that the team might want to add a proven star to become relevant once again.

Boasting the No. 2 pick in next week’s draft, these Kings certainly have a top-notch trade chip to entice San Antonio. It also has a nice amount of youngsters to help sweeten the pot, Justin Jackson, De’Aaron Fox and Buddy Hield included.

Attempting to acquire Leonard would come with a major risk. As noted above, he has just one year remaining on his contract. Short of the star agreeing to an extension, Sacramento would be taking a major chance in acquiring him.
