Rudy Gay unsure if he’ll opt out of contract

Rudy Gay joined the San Antonio Spurs as a free agent in July 2017, but the veteran forward hasn’t determined whether he’ll hit the open market again this summer.

In an interview with Alex Kennedy of HoopsHype, Gay said he’s not focused on that decision yet.

“No. Right now, I’m just watching these playoff games and enjoying it. When that time comes, I have enough people around me to help with that decision.”

Gay declined a player option following the 2016-17 season, ultimately sacrificing $6 million to leave the dysfunctional Sacramento Kings. He joined the Spurs, who encountered a rougher season than expected due to Kawhi Leonard’s injury and the subsequent saga.

Though an injury of his own limited Gay to 57 appearances, he averaged 11.5 points and 5.1 rebounds. The 31-year-old served as a second-unit player, really, for the first time in his career.

The determining factor for Gay is likely whether he’s drawn to the family-oriented culture of the Spurs or if he wants a larger role elsewhere. He’s not in a rush to make a decision, but several NBA teams will be waiting for his choice.
