Padres designate former franchise cornerstone Chase Headley for assignment

Chase Headley’s second stint with the San Diego Padres lasted all of 27 games and 52 at-bats. The team announced on Saturday that is has designated the 33-year-old infielder for assignment.

“It got to the point where it’s best for everyone involved to make that change,” Padres manager Andy Green said. “Nothing but gratitude towards the way he did his job. Wish him the absolute best.”

An original second-round pick of the Padres back in 2005, Headley spent his first seven-plus seasons in Southern California. His best performance came back in 2012 when the infielder hit .286 with 31 homers and an NL-best 115 RBI en route to finishing fifth in the MVP voting.

Ultimately, San Diego dealt Headley to the New York Yankees midway through the 2014 season. He was then re-acquired by the Padres this past winter. But things have gone horribly wrong since. Prior to being designated for assignment, Headley was hitting .115 with zero homers and four RBI in 27 games.
