Michigan AD wants Jim Harbaugh to stay until he retires

Jim Harbaugh hired former 49ers executive Tom Gamble, according to a report

Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel issued a strong statement of support toward head football coach Jim Harbaugh, noting he doesn’t want to see him coach anywhere ever again.

Speaking with reporters during a Big Ten conference, Manuel made it clear he wants Harbaugh, and head basketball coach John Beilein, to coach at Michigan until they retire.

“I love my coaches across the board, love those two guys in particular,” Manuel said Tuesday, per mlive.com. “I’m extremely pleased with where we are from a staffing, coaching standpoint and Jim and John are two people that I would love to see retire from this institution, retire from coaching. …

“I don’t want Jim to go anywhere either, but he’s got four more years at this point. Jim also knows how I feel about him. We’ve had great conversations and I don’t want him to go anywhere either.”

Harbaugh has been flighty over the course of his coaching career. Since he’s become a head coach, starting out with his tenure at San Diego, Harbaugh has never stayed in one place for longer than four seasons.

It could be argued that the reason for this is that all his moves, up until the point where he was let go by the San Francisco 49ers, were vertical moves. So, it’s going to be interesting to see if Harbaugh can settle in for the long haul at Michigan.

Since arriving at Michigan in 2015, Harbaugh has led the Wolverines to a 28-11 record overall, a 18-8 record in the Big Ten and has gone 1-2 in bowl games.
