Former first-round pick Josh Freeman was once a promising young quarterback for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers until his NFL career was derailed. He got a fresh start in the Canadian Football League, playing for the Montreal Alouettes, but on Saturday the team announced Freeman has decided to retire instead.

“We would like to thank Josh for his work and dedication. He was a consummate professional throughout camp,” said Alouettes General Manager Kavis Reed, per the league’s official website. “We respect his decision and we wish him the best in the future.”

During his career as an NFL passer, Freeman appeared in 62 games, earning a 25-36 record in 61 starts. He completed 57.6 percent of his passes for 13,873 yards with 81 touchdowns and 68 interceptions.

Freeman spent most of his career with the Buccaneers and also had brief tenures with the Minnesota Vikings and Indianapolis Colts.
