Warriors and Cavs dominate NBA merchandise sales, but others making strides

For the third consecutive season, Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry led the NBA in jersey sales. For the third consecutive season, LeBron James of the Cleveland Cavaliers finished second in that category. It’s not a surprise that Golden State and Cleveland finished No. 1 and No. 2 in merchandise sales, respectively.

Though, the emergence of the Philadelphia 76ers among the upper echelon of popularity within the NBA is the biggest takeaway here.

Joel Embiid finished eighth in jersey sales while likely NBA Rookie of the Year and fellow Sixers star Ben Simmons rounded out the top 10.

As you can see above, Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo finished fourth in jersey sales, behind only Curry, James and Kevin Durant.

According to ESPN’s Darren Rovell, Philadelphia as a team finished third in sales, only behind the above-mentioned Warriors and Cavaliers. Shockingly, the Bucks came in sixth in this category.

As much as things might remain the same, it’s rather clear that we’re seeing a natural evolution around the Association. Both Philadelphia and Milwaukee have marketable young players. And as it relates to the Sixers, they’re already legitimate NBA title contenders.

It’s not a surprise that on-court success has played a role in said popularity. We’ve seen this with both Cleveland and Golden State in recent years. Now that the Sixers are making a major statement on the court, they’re only going to see an increase in relevance from a marketing standpoint.
