John Elway: Baker Mayfield has overcome size issue

Oklahoma Sooners quarterback Baker Mayfield against Texas in college football Week 7

Baker Mayfield doesn’t measure up, literally, to the other top quarterback prospects, but Denver Broncos general manager John Elway isn’t concerned about the former Oklahoma star’s height.

After seeing Mayfield dominate for three years in college football, Elway is confident about Mayfield’s size not being a problem, according to Nicki Jhabvala of The Athletic.

The pre-draft process is so focused on picking apart players, and Mayfield only standing a shade under 6-foot-1 was a popular topic. Josh Rosen, Sam Darnold and Josh Allen all checked at 6-foot-3 or taller.

But, finally, there’s a high-ranked NFL administrator who has publicly voiced support about the 2017 Heisman Trophy winner.

In each of the last two seasons, Mayfield set an NCAA record for passer efficiency rating. He threw for at least 3,700 yards and 36 touchdowns during all three years at Oklahoma while never tossing more than eight interceptions.

Sure, the Big 12 is a wide-open conference, but if that was easy, more quarterbacks would do it. And nobody else did. That production has put Mayfield in a position to hear his name called in the top-three of the 2018 draft.

In his case, size doesn’t matter.
