San Francisco Giants first baseman Brandon Belt set a new MLB record Sunday when the San Francisco Giants took on the Los Angeles Angels. His at-bat in the first inning against Jaime Barria took over 13 minutes from start to finish and ended up going 21 pitches, 16 of which he fouled off.
Unfortunately for Belt, the new record did not end with him getting on base. He flew out to right field, ending his run at history on an anticlimactic note.
Belt's at-bat set an MLB record for pitches in an at-bat, breaking previous mark of 20 pitches between Rickey Gutierrez and Bartolo Colon on June 26, 1998.

Here’s a really cool graphic that shows all 21 pitches.

Thanks in large part to Belt’s record-setting at-bat, Barria finished the first inning having thrown an absurd 49 pitches, which is roughly half what you’re looking for from your starter in an entire game. He did end up getting out of the inning unscathed, however, as the Giants failed to score.
