Report: Seahawks ‘in talks’ to re-sign Byron Maxwell

The Seattle Seahawks picked up Byron Maxwell as a free agent during the 2017 season, and they’re trying to keep the cornerback from leaving the franchise for a second time.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media said the Seahawks are in ongoing talks to bring back Maxwell, who is an unrestricted free agent.

A sixth-round pick of Seattle in 2011, Maxwell put together a breakout year during his third NFL season. In 2013 and 2014 combined, he posted 67 tackles, defended 24 passes and picked off six.

Maxwell parlayed that success into a massive free-agent contract with the Philadelphia Eagles, though he lasted one season there before the Miami Dolphins acquired him. Within a year-and-a half, however, Miami decided to release Maxwell.

Seattle scooped him up, and he started the last six games of the 2017 campaign after Richard Sherman tore his Achilles. Maxwell tallied 38 stops with seven pass defenses and one interception.

Since the Seahawks parted with Sherman, Jeremy Lane and DeShawn Shead this offseason, Maxwell would provide one familiar face at corner in 2018.
