Report: Kyrie Irving knee flaring up, to get second opinion

The troubles of Boston Celtics point guard Kyrie Irving continue, as it’s being reported that his ailing left knee continues to flare up and that he is going in for a second opinion.

Tony Massarotti of 98.5 The Sports Hub was first on this report, noting Irving could end up needing to have the screws removed from his surgically repaired knee and opt not to play at all the rest of the season.

A while later, Shams Charania of The Vertical confirmed this report.

Irving hasn’t played since two Sundays ago when he aggravated the knee, which he said had been sore for a while.

In 60 games this year with the Celtics, Irving has averaged 24.4 points, 3.8 rebounds, 5.1 assists and 1.1 steals per game. The Celtics are also without Marcus Smart right now, though he hopes to return for the playoffs.

Heading into Tuesday’s game against the Oklahoma City Thunder, Boston is 47-23, five games behind the Toronto Raptors for the top seed in the east.
