Report: Eight players transferring from Pitt

The decision to fire Kevin Stallings meant Pitt needs to find a new basketball coach. It turns out the university basically needs a new team.

According to ESPN’s Jeff Goodman, eight players will receive their release to transfer from the school.

That’s a mind-boggling, jaw-dropping number. And the Panthers are set to watch a majority of key contributors leave.

Goodman notes the group includes Ryan Luther, who averaged 12.7 points, 10.1 rebounds and 2.8 assists during an injury-shortened year. Since he only appeared in 10 games, Luther can apply for a medical redshirt and, if granted, may be eligible for a graduate transfer.

Marcus Carr, Parker Stewart and Shamiel Stevenson, the No. 3, 4 and 5 scorers on the team in 2017-18, all asked to transfer and are expected to receive permission to contact other schools. Terrell Davis, Khameron Davis, Kene Chukwuka and Malik Ellison also may leave.

Beyond the possibility of someone changing his mind, the only good news — really, the only thing — is leading scorer Jared Wilson-Frame did not request a release.
