Baker Mayfield set to meet with the Bills Friday night

Oklahoma Sooners quarterback Baker Mayfield in college football Week 2

The Buffalo Bills have made it clear that they intend on retaining enigmatic quarterbak Tyrod Taylor. Whether that means Taylor will be the team’s starting quarterback next season remains to be seen. The issues between the two sides are by now well known. That was taken to a new level last season when head coach Sean McDermott benched Taylor in favor of then rookie Nathan Peterman.

Heading into the offseason after earning their first playoff appearance since 1999, the Bills have a ton of draft capital to acquire a franchise quarterback during the annual event in April. In fact, they boast consecutive picks (21st and 22nd overall) in the first round as well as two second-round picks. This has led to speculation that Buffalo will indeed go quarterback some point early in the draft.

If so, it’s now readily apparent that reigning Heisman winner Baker Mayfield could be the target. The former Oklahoma standout announced at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis that he will have a formal meeting with the Bills on Friday evening.

Depending on who you ask, there’s a chance Mayfield will be available when the Bills are on the clock in the first round of the draft. The team had previously been linked to UCLA’s Josh Rosen, which would require a trade up into the top two. Mayfield himself would cost less in terms of draft capital.

But one thing is readily apparent here. Buffalo is out there looking for a quarterback of the future. Whether that means Taylor’s days in Western New York are coming to an end remains to be seen.
