Vikings reportedly expected to hire former Raiders OC Todd Downing

Even after losing offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur to the New York Giants, it sure looks like the Minnesota Vikings are not going to miss a beat on offense. On the heels of hiring former Eagles quarterbacks coach John DeFilippo to replace Shurmur Minnesota is now reportedly bringing in former Raiders offensive coordinator Todd Downing as an assistant.

Downing held his first offensive coordinator job with the Raiders, but lasted on that job for just one season. Oakland finished 25th in points scored last season — a major regression from what we saw in 2016. Though, it’s important to note that Downing’s role in Minnesota will not include calling plays.

Prior to last season’s struggles, he was seen as an up-and-coming assistant around the league. Downing’s NFL coaching career began with these Vikings back in 2003. From there, he spent time with the then St. Louis Rams, Detroit Lions, Buffalo Bills and the Raiders in a variety of different roles.

Working under what will be a first-year offensive coordinator in DeFilippo, it’s not a bad thing for him to add an experienced offensive mind to the staff. Downing surely is that.
