Tennessee hires former Heisman winner Chris Weinke as RB coach

New Tennessee head coach Jeremy Pruitt and Chris Weinke worked together on Alabama’s staff in 2017. In 2018, they’ll be working together again with the Volunteers.

On Wednesday, Pruitt announced that Weinke will serve as Tennessee’s running backs coach in 2018.

“I’m excited to have Chris Weinke on our staff to coach running backs,” Pruitt said, per Zach Barnett of College Football Talk. “He has played the game at the highest level and what he has accomplished on the field speaks for itself. He is also an outstanding coach and teacher of the game, coaching in the NFL, in college this past season and at the high school level. He has a great eye for talent and knows the game on the offensive side of the ball as well as anybody I’ve been around. He will be a great fit for our Tennessee program.”

Weinke had a decorated college career. He quarterbacked Florida State’s National Championship winning team in 1999 and won the won the Heisman Trophy the following year. He’s also somewhat intertwined with the Tennessee program. In 1998, the Volunteers claimed the National Championship by defeating Weinke’s Seminoles in the Fiesta Bowl (though Weinke was out with an injury), the first National Championship of the BCS era.

After his NFL career ended, Weinke served as the head coach for the IMG academy, the quarterbacks coach of the Los Angeles Rams, and as an offensive analyst for the Crimson Tide’s 2017 National Championship squad.
