Report: Grizzlies not discussing trades for Marc Gasol

The ugly truth is the Memphis Grizzlies are a bad team. But by shutting down all inquiries for star center Marc Gasol, they’re not committing to a youth movement, either.

According to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, the Grizzlies are “consistently” refusing to discuss trades involving Gasol.

Memphis is likely to move veteran swingman Tyreke Evans prior to Thursday’s trade deadline, but the front office still views Gasol as a key piece of the team’s future.

The three-time All-Star has played all 10 NBA seasons with the organization. This year, Gasol is averaging 17.9 points, 8.5 rebounds, 3.9 assists and 1.5 blocks, but the Grizzlies are a meager 18-36. They’re close to having the league’s worst record.

But that might also be why Memphis is keeping Gasol. Since the organization is extremely likely to hold a top-10 pick in the 2018 NBA draft anyway, the Grizzlies can build around Gasol and Mike Conley rather than just one of them.

Though other teams should continue pursuing Gasol, Memphis probably won’t move him before the deadline.
