Now that former New England Patriots defensive coordinator Matt Patricia has moved on to become the Detroit Lions’ head coach, there’s a huge position to fill on Bill Belichick’s staff.
Reports earlier in the week noted that Ohio State defensive coordinator Greg Schiano was set to leave the school for the same position with the Patriots (more on that here).
That’s no longer going to be the case. According to Bruce Feldman of Fox Sports, Schiano has decided to remain with the Buckeyes.
Greg Schiano tells me he is staying at #OhioState contrary to reports from Monday that he was leaving for the Patriots. Big day for the Buckeyes. Schiano played a key part in landing top OT Nick Petit-Frere out of Tampa.

Considering a move to the NFL would have been seen as a promotion for the former Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach, this is somewhat of a surprise. It also likely means New England looks internally for a Patricia replacement. That will almost certainly come with the team promoting linebackers coach Brian Flores to the defensive coordinator position.
