Report: Derrick Rose not expected to sign until after All-Star Break

Derrick Rose

Former NBA MVP Derrick Rose cleared waivers on Monday and is now free to sign with any NBA team. This comes after he was acquired by the Utah Jazz from the Cleveland Cavaliers in a three-team trade last week.

Most anticipate that Rose will eventually land with former head coach Tom Thibodeau in Minnesota, joining the likes of Taj Gibson and Jimmy Butler with the Wolves. Though, that’s in no way etched in stone.

Now comes this report from Marc Stein of The New York Times indicating that we can’t expect a resolution to this matter until after this weekend’s All-Star Break.

Rose, 29, is a shell of his former MVP self. Prior to being traded from Cleveland, he averaged 9.8 points in less than 20 minutes of action. The three-time All-Star also took time away from the team to contemplate his future in the Association. As injury plagued as they come, some have openly wondered whether Rose’s career is over.

Even then, he is just one year removed from averaging 18.0 points and shooting at a 47 percent clip for the New York Knicks. Contending teams could definitely look to Rose as a depth option off the bench during the stretch run.
