Report: Colts request to interview Saints’ Dan Campbell for head coach job

Now that the Josh McDaniels fiasco is behind them, the Indianapolis Colts move forward in their search for a new head coach. Sure the team still has to be a bit upset over McDaniels’ late change of heart. But this game doesn’t wait for people to get all in their feels. Indianapolis now has to move swiftly to find a new head coach.

According to NFL Media’s Mike Garafolo, the Colts have put in a request with the Saints to interview assistant coach and tight ends coach Dan Campbell for their vacant head coaching position.

Some of you will remember Campbell for his time as the Miami Dolphins’ interim head coach after the team fired Joe Philbin back in 2015. Campbell, a former NFL tight end, led Miami to a 5-7 record after the team started that season 1-3. Prior to that, Campbell spent four seasons as a tight ends coach in South Beach. He’s been in his current role with the Saints for the past two seasons.

Considered a player-friendly coach, some will question whether Campbell has the experience to take over Indy’s sinking ship. But this is a clear indication that GM Chris Ballard is casting a wide net in an effort to find a long-term replacement for the recently fired Chuck Pagano. That can’t be seen as a bad thing.
