Lions’ Matt Patricia will keep Jim Bob Cooter as offensive coordinator

New Detroit Lions head coach Matt Patricia isn’t backing out of his deal to leave the New England Patriots. In fact, he was announced as the Lions new head coach in a press conference on Wednesday.

During said Q&A with the media, Patricia made sure to note that current Lions offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter will remain in that role on his new staff.

In no way should this come as a surprise. Cooter is among the most-respected offensive minds in the game and has done a tremendous job with Detroit since being promoted from quarterbacks coach during the 2015 campaign. In two seasons as the full-time offensive coordinator in Detroit, he has overseen a major progression from that unit, finishing this past season seventh in the NFL in points scored.

Normally a new head coach would want to bring in his own top-level assistants and coordinators. But in this case, it made perfect sense for Patricia to retain Cooter. He’s a defensive-minded head coach, and having an experienced play-caller on the other side of the field while help Patricia transition to this new role.
