In the midst of yet another mass shooting at an American school, football coach Aaron Feis is said to have put his own life on the line to save students at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Wednesday afternoon, per the Miami Herald.
Feis was thought to have passed away initially, but later reports indicated he survived, despite being shot.
“Coach Feis has not passed. He was shot but is not dead,” Jordan May, a coach at the school and the son of head football coach Willis “Peanut” May, said on Twitter, per the report.
Per the report, Feis has been a security guard at the high school for over eight years. A former student, Aaron Hofmann, who has also coached the swimming and water polo teams, indicated Hoffman takes the job very seriously and deeply cares about the children he’s there to protect.
“He’s very well dedicated to the safety of the school during the daytime,” Hofmann said.
Hofmann described the coach as “a quiet person” with a good sense of humor. “When there’s a funny joke he is always laughing for sure,” he said.
Feis has a long history with Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, having graduated at this school back in 1999. Additionally, per the school’s website, he’s worked for the school for his entire coaching career.
